Step 4 - Using the language spontaneously

After providing regular opportunities for the learners to use the language through Step 1-3 activities, the learners will be able to take advantage of opportunities to use the language pattern(s) by responding and using it spontaneously in various contexts by retrieving the patterns. Below are examples of how opportunities could be planned to use the patterns presented across the 6 Areas of Learning and Experience within and outside the school.

Essentials of conversation: mapping progress

This example is based on Greg Horton's 'Group Talk' work and outlines the essential patterns of spontaneous conversation. The purpose of the resource is to offer a structure to nurture natural speakers in preparation for an oral assessment in secondary school.
